Fire & Rescue
Altus Fire and Rescue Department is a professional fire-rescue service in the City of Altus. The Department is composed of 32 uniformed personnel and 1 civilian employee at two fire stations located within the City. On average, over 700 emergency calls are responded to annually. The City has an ISO rating of 3.
The Altus Fire and Rescue Department responds to fire and medical emergency as well as Haz-Mat, utility emergencies, weather related events and vehicular accidents. Response to emergency events is less than 4 minutes on average. Also, the Department responds to non-emergency calls such as smoke and CO detector malfunctions, life-safety lockout, lift assistance, MediFlight and Air Evac approach, free smoke detector installation and general assistance calls.
Department personnel belongs to various professional organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association, Oklahoma Fire Chiefs Association, Oklahoma State Firefighters Association, Fire Service Instructors of Oklahoma, Fire Marshals Association of Oklahoma, International Association of Fire Fighters, and the Professional Fire Fighters of Oklahoma.
When on duty, Firefighters are required to complete two hours of classroom training and clean and inspect stations and equipment. Throughout the year the Department cleans, paints and completes flow testing on over 680 fire hydrants throughout the City and the FireMarshal /Inspector conducts over 800 business inspections.
