Altus City Clerk/Treasurer Receives Award for Her Service as an Honorary Commander at Altus AFB

Debbie Davis was Honorary Commander of the 97th Training Squadron for the past two years

Altus, OK— July 28, 2020 Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Tarnowski, the Commander of the 97th Training Squadron at Altus Air Force Base, in Altus, Oklahoma, presented Altus City Clerk/Treasurer, Debbie Davis, with a plaque on Friday, July 24, 2020 in appreciation of her service as the Honorary Commander of the 97th Training Squadron.  Mrs. Davis has been a long-time supporter of Altus AFB and its mission and has served in this honorary role for the past two years.  Lt Col Tarnowski visited the Altus Municipal Building with other uniformed dignitaries from Altus AFB to present Mrs. Davis with her plaque and to thank Davis for her unwavering support.

Lt. Col. Tarnowski commands the 97th Training Squadron (TRS).  The TRS manages the aircrew training program for almost 300 instructors and over 2,000 annual C-17 Globemaster III, KC-135 Stratotanker, and KC-46 Pegasus students.

Debbie Davis has served as the elected Clerk/Treasurer of the City of Altus for the past nine years and has been the Honorary Commander of the 97th Training Squadron since 2018.  In 1968, Mrs. Davis moved with her family to Altus when her father, Barney Barnett, was stationed here as a C-141 flight engineer.  Barnett retired as a chief master sergeant after 16 years of military service at Altus AFB, including serving as the senior enlisted advisor to the base commander.  After retirement from the Air Force, CMSgt Barnett spent another six years of active civic involvement with the base.

Coincidentally, the same day that Mrs. Davis was honored in this ceremony also happened to be the last day of work at Altus AFB for Mrs. Davis’s husband, David Davis.  Mr. Davis retired on July 24, 2020 after thirty years of civil service at Altus AFB.  Between Mrs. Davis’s time as Honorary Commander, her husband’s 30 years of civil service, and CMSgt Barnett’s 22 years of service, Debbie Davis’s family has 54 years of service to Altus AFB.

Debbie Davis has held many positions of service in the community and throughout Oklahoma.  Mrs. Davis has served multiple terms as the President of the Southwest Federation of Republican Women and served as President of the Oklahoma Federation of Republican Women for 4 years from January 2016 to December 2019.  Mrs. Davis has also served as the Altus Christmas Parade Chairman for over 15 years and has served on the Board of the Altus All-Sports Association for 22 years.  Before being elected to public office, Davis served as the Secretary at Elm and Hudson Church of Christ for 10 years and worked as a teller and a personal banker at NBC Bank for the ten years prior to her church service.  Showing her good humor, Mrs. Davis likes to joke that she is “pretty nice 95% of the time.”
