1. Can visitors, such as friends and family, fly into Altus Airport?

Altus Quartz Mountain Regional Airport is what's known as a "General Aviation Airport." It serves primarily small aircraft owned and operated by businesses and private owners. The nearest airport that operates commercial flights is in Lawton, approximately 50 miles west of Altus. Other airports that serve Altus commercially are Oklahoma City and Wichita Falls, Texas.

1. Where can I look up City ordinances and laws?

Local laws in Altus are known as City Ordinances. Ordinances must be unanimously approved by Altus Council. You can view and search Altus City Ordinances on our Municode Website.

1. What are the most common violations?

Tall grass & weeds, abandoned vehicles, and trash & debris.

5. I called last week, why isn’t the grass mowed?

If the city has to mow the property, it will take about 3 to 4 weeks.

6. Am I responsible to mow back yard and my half of the alley?

Yes, and you will receive a notice if reported

7. How many cars can be parked at my residence?

In the current code, there is no limit.

8. How many days will I have to correct code violation?

In the letter, we will state the number of days, typically it is 11 days

9. Can I park my car on the grass?

Parking shall be restricted to small motor vehicles and motor vehicles less than 22 feet in length.

10. What is considered a junk or abandoned vehicle?

At least 2 of the following: Expired tags, flat tires, broken glass, missing parts, weeds around vehicle

11. How can I file an appeal for a violation?

A property owner may file a written notice of appeal with the City Clerk within 10 days after the code enforcement action is posted. You should also notify the code enforcement officer so that pending abatement action might be postponed.

12. Can I arrange more time to correct a violation or make payments on a fine?

Code Enforcement will do its best to work with property owners to correct violation and/or establish a payment schedule.

Yes. The landfill does not accept the following items:
- Biomedical Waste
- Chemical Waste
- Commercial Demolition Waste
- Federal or State Regulated Waste
- Hazardous Waste
- Industrial Waste
- Liquid Waste
- Sewage

2. If I am taking a load of debris to the landfill what do I need?

If you are a residential customer of the City of Altus take a copy of your utility bill showing you pay for trash pickup and an ID, this will allow you to dispose of 1500 pounds of trash each month for free. Anything over the 1500 pounds you will have to pay for. The free 1500 pounds does not apply to commercial accounts or contractors for hire.

1. I have received a traffic citation, do I have to go to court?

Traffic citations can be paid in full prior to court date with no court appearance required, if payment arrangements are needed a court appearance is required.

2. What citations does the Altus Municipal Court process?

We only process citations for the Altus Police Department, contact the Jackson County Courthouse at 482-0448 for citations written from any other agency.

3. What forms of payments are accepted?

We accept all forms of payment in person, and credit card payments can be received by phone.

1. Where is the landfill?

The City of Altus Landfill is located 8 miles west of town on highway 62 and 1.5 miles north on South CR 196 (N1960). Check our landfill page for more information, use the map at the bottom of the right column to get directions from your location. Altus Municipal Landfill

3. I have trimmed my trees and shrubs and don't know what to do with the trimmings. How should I dispose of them?

If you hired someone to do the trimming they are responsible for hauling the materials to the City landfill. If you did the work and are able please take the materials to the landfill. The first 1500 lbs. you take will be free. If you can not haul yourself please stack the material on your side of the alley, cut into small pieces, not over 3 feet long and as space permits place small quantities in the dumpster. Please remember your neighbors and don't overfill the dumpster.

4. How can I dispose of cans of paint?

Offer it on one of the local buy, sell or trade web sites or on the local radio stations morning programs. If that fails open the cans and let the paint harden and take it to the landfill or put it in the dumpster. The landfill will not accept liquid waste.

5. Where do I stack items for bulk pickup?

In the alley adjacent to your property line. Do not cover up water or gas meters and please don’t pile it against the dumpster, the driver won’t be able to empty the dumpster if debris is stacked to close to it.

6. How many dumpsters should be in my alley?

In most alleys that have houses on both sides it is one dumpster for every four houses. In alleys that only have houses on one side, the dumpsters are spaced for use by two or three households depending on the size of the lots. We try not to make the customer walk very far to dispose of their trash.

7. My neighbors are stacking debris on my side of the alley, what can I do?

City code says residents are to place debris for bulk pickup in the alley adjacent to their property line. If you are not comfortable talking to your neighbor you can call code enforcement at 481-2263 and file a complaint.

1. Can I hook up my own electric service?

You may not "hook up" your own electrical service. As a homeowner, landlord or responsible party for billing, you are required to provide acceptable electrical wiring and infrastructure on your premises in accordance with applicable city codes.

Commercial: 1.5% of the previous 12-month history, or $200 (whichever is greater).
