City of Altus Provides Update on Community Pool Project
The City of Altus recognizes the community’s concerns regarding the status of the community pool and lazy river. We understand the frustration surrounding the facility’s closure and the questions residents have about how we arrived at this point, where the project currently stands, and what steps are being taken moving forward.
The pool renovation and lazy river project was undertaken to create a long-term recreational asset for our community and to improve the experience for families and visitors. The project was awarded through the public bid process in accordance with applicable procurement procedures.
During construction and following the initial opening of the facility, a number of issues related to portions of the project were identified. While the facility did receive operational approval from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, additional concerns later emerged involving certain construction elements and project modifications that were not fully resolved to the City’s satisfaction. Those issues have since resulted in the need for substantial repairs and further evaluation.
Over the past several months, the City has worked diligently with engineers, contractors, legal counsel, and other parties, in an effort to determine the best path forward. Our priority throughout this process has been to find a responsible solution that protects taxpayer resources while also working toward reopening the facility for public use as quickly and safely as possible.
Because the matter is now entering a legal phase, the City must be careful discussing specific details related to liability, responsibility, or potential litigation. However, we want citizens to know the following:
• The City remains committed to reopening the pool and lazy river.
• Independent evaluations and repair planning are underway.
• Public safety and long-term reliability of the facility are the City’s highest priorities.
• The City will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available and as legal counsel permits.
We have taken steps and contracted with a company to get the main pool opened as soon as possible.
We understand the disappointment after the community’s excitement surrounding the project. City leadership shares that disappointment and is committed to resolving these issues in a professional, transparent, and responsible manner.
We will provide additional updates regarding the project as they are available.
