Flying Drones in the City of Altus
Protecting Our Skies — City of Altus, Regional Airport, and Altus Air Force Base Airspace
Drone operations in Altus require careful coordination to ensure the safety of both civilian aviation and military training flights conducted by Altus Air Force Base (AFB).
Understanding Our Airspace
Altus Air Force Base actively utilizes the surrounding airspace for essential training missions, extending approximately 6 nautical miles from the base. Additionally, the Altus/Quartz Mountain Regional Airport manages air traffic within its own controlled airspace.
Drone operators flying within controlled airspace areas, such as near Altus AFB or the Regional Airport, must obtain proper FAA authorization through the FAA’s LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) system prior to any flight.
When Should You Submit a Drone Flight Plan?

You plan to fly at an altitude of over 100 feet above ground level (AGL).
