Emergency Management Mission

The mission of Altus Emergency Management is to safeguard life, property, and the environment by preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters and emergencies—both natural and man-made.

We serve the residents of Altus through proactive planning, effective communication, and community partnerships. Our goal is to build a more resilient city by promoting public safety, coordinating response efforts, and ensuring that every citizen is informed and prepared.

Personal Disaster Kit

Start by creating a plan using Ready.gov as a guide. Then, build a kit with essentials like water, food, first aid, batteries, and important documents.

The Emergency Management calendar offers a helpful checklist to guide you through each step of building your kit.

If you have questions or need help preparing, the Emergency Management Department—and a team of dedicated local volunteers—is here to support you. We’re ready to help you stay informed, safe, and prepared for any type of emergency.

Warnings

Warnings in Altus are shared using the following systems to quickly inform residents of danger:

  • NOAA Weather Radios with special alert features automatically broadcast audible alerts. For those with hearing impairments, a visual alert may also be included.

  • Cable TV alerts may interrupt broadcasts with an emergency audio message.

  • Mobile phone alerts are available through the Altus Alert Program. We recommend all residents sign up and keep their contact information updated.

  • Local radio and TV stations also share updates.
A battery-powered AM/FM radio or small TV should be part of your personal emergency kit in case power or internet is lost.

Outdoor Warning Sirens

The City of Altus maintains a system of outdoor warning sirens designed to alert residents of imminent hazards, including severe weather and other emergencies.

How the Sirens Work

Sirens are activated by Emergency Management or 911 personnel. There is no “all clear” signal. Sirens may sound for various emergency situations, but most commonly during:

  • Tornado Warnings

  • Situations requiring immediate shelter-in-place

If you hear a siren and are outdoors, go indoors immediately and seek shelter.

If you hear a siren and are already indoors, remain inside and stay tuned to reliable news or emergency information sources.

Do not go outside to investigate.
