Wastewater Plant Operator

Job Summary

The Water Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of water treatment facilities to ensure the safe and efficient production of potable water. The operator ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations while maintaining optimal plant performance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operations & Monitoring:

  • Operate and monitor water treatment plant equipment, including pumps, valves, filters, and chemical dosing systems.

  • Analyze water quality using instruments and testing kits to ensure compliance with safety and health standards.

  • Adjust chemical dosages and treatment processes based on water quality results.

  • Maintain proper flow rates, pressures, and levels in tanks and reservoirs.

Maintenance & Repairs:

  • Perform routine maintenance on plant equipment and identify issues that require repairs. o Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, or chemical process issues.

  • Ensure cleanliness and functionality of plant facilities.

• Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:

Maintain accurate records of water quality tests, operational activities, and maintenance work.

Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations set by the EPA, OSHA, ODEQ, and local authorities.

Prepare and submit reports on plant performance, water quality, and regulatory compliance as required.

Safety & Emergency Response:

  • Follow safety procedures and use protective equipment while handling chemicals and operating equipment.

  • Respond to plant emergencies, equipment failures, or water quality issues promptly.

  • Participate in emergency preparedness drills and training.

• Customer & Public Relations:

  • Address water quality concerns from the public and provide technical support when necessary.

  • Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and government agencies on water treatment projects and improvements.

    Qualifications & Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate’s degree in water treatment technology or related field preferred.

  • Valid water treatment plant operator certification/license (varies by state or region).

  • Experience in water treatment plant operations or related field preferred.

  • Strong understanding of water treatment processes, chemistry, and environmental regulations.

  • Ability to operate and maintain mechanical and electrical equipment.

  • Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting.

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to work independently and respond to emergencies as needed.

Work Environment:

• Work may involve exposure to chemicals, loud machinery, and outdoor conditions.

• Requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.

• May require working in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Other Requirements

• Must possess a valid driver’s license.

• May be required to provide proof of US Citizenship for completion of form I-9

• Undergo pre-employment drug-screening and background checks.

• Regular attendance is required for the successful performance of this position.
