Apprentice Lineman D - Electric
Nature of Work
An apprenticed lineman performing complex work in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical distribution lines. The incumbent exercises some independent decision making in accomplishing specific assignments. Spends much of the time learning apprenticeship-type skills and learning principles and procedures required for apprenticeship training. With experience/knowledge, may exercise more independence in accomplishing job tasks under general supervision. The apprenticeship program permits an employee to progress from the D level to A level until passing all formal training and job experience requirements to become a journey-level lineman.
Essential Job Functions
Assists with the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of overhead and underground electrical power lines and systems. Such work is performed on the ground and the power pole or bucket truck.
Assists in the construction, operation, maintenance and repair of transmission and substation facilities.
Assists with or may handle service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems.
Continues to receive training both in book/classroom skills and on the job skills. Must continue to pass ongoing training to proceed to higher skill/job levels.
Operates motorized equipment, hand tools, and performs routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery, and tools. May performs janitorial duties in shop areas.
Follows safety guidelines as part of training.
May assist in providing technical direction and/or supervision to lower level less skilled apprentice linemen.
The less experienced apprentice lineman does more work on the ground setting poles, operating a ditch trencher, stringing wire, etc. The skilled do more work on the power pole or basket truck performs a variety of tasks on hot and cold circuits.
When on call, must be able to respond to the call location within 30 minutes
May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays for extended periods, to perform duties as part of the City’s recovery force during emergencies and disasters.
May assist or handle the repair of street lights; may help meter readers upon request; Performs welding and masonry tasks. May also perform work of an equipment operator, maintenance worker, etc.
May stock and service vehicles to be equipped to respond to emergency situations.
May document and record data necessary for the maintenance of system records, transformer tickets, etc.
May be required to serve as a member of the City’s Contingency Response Force during emergencies,
May work long unusual hours or shifts.
Education, Training, and Experience
High School graduate or GED equivalent required. Must be able to complete necessary requirements of a 4-year apprenticeship or equivalent program.
Must read and comprehend technical drawings, sketches and manuals in English.
The D level has about 6 months experience and/or equivalent training.
Supervisory Responsibility
No supervisory responsibility required.
Special Certificates, Registrations, Licenses
The D level has about six months experience and/or equivalent training. Must possess an Altus Class D Electrical Certificate.
The C-level performs increasingly more complex tasks with less supervision and must have at least one year of electrical line construction and/or maintenance experience. Twenty-four hours of formal power line training and have held an Altus Class D Electrical Certificate for one year.
The B level performs increasingly more complex tasks with less supervision and must have at least three years electrical line experience, at least 70 hours formal training and a Class C Electrical Certificate for one year.
The A level must have at least four years electrical line experience, 100 hours of formal training and a Class B Electrical Certificate for one year.
Must possess a valid Class A Oklahoma commercial driver's license with an air brake rider (trailer)
Must possess a current Oklahoma driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment for power line construction, repair, and maintenance.
Working knowledge of electricity as applied to distribution systems.
Working knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions of the line repairer trade/profession.
Ability to climb poles with a climber's belt and hook and perform strenuous duties in all kinds of weather.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions quickly, accurately, and under adverse conditions.
Must be able to make mathematical computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to walk, climb, and work from ladders, or at various heights, on uneven and slippery surfaces. Performing manual/physically demanding work under unfavorable weather conditions while handling dangerous equipment or material.
Must not have a fear of heights.
Must be able to lift, move and maneuver heavy weights of up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis but moderate loads on a frequent basis. Weights above 50 pounds should be accomplished with assistance or with assistance and machinery.
Must be able to climb a power pole using climbing hooks and belt.
Must be able to drive all vehicles assigned to the line crew, operate digger derrick to set poles, use jackhammer, etc.
Must be capable of pulling, pushing, bending, stooping and kneeling on a frequent basis.
Must have sufficient eyesight to judge distances and coordination to get and use the appropriate equipment and tools and assist other line repairers.
Must have the endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard eight or ten (10) hour day according to the schedule.
Must be able to work long hours and overtime during holidays, emergencies, weekends, etc. Subject to call out work.
Environmental Conditions and Safety Concerns
Will work with hazardous equipment and electricity.
Must observe safety concerns and assist other repairers to be working in safe environments.
Must work in all temperatures, with excessive noise from machines, jackhammers, chain saws and other equipment.
Work in extremes of temperature, dust, dirt and climatic conditions such as rain, sleet snow, etc.
Work is performed at varying heights above ground, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces.
Equipment
Lineman's climbers and belt, hand tools, power operated tools. Equipment including digger derricks, aerial lift trucks, backhoe, and similar construction equipment such as a tree trimming chipper, forklift, and wire pulling equipment, and bucket truck.
