Nature of Work

Skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and remodeling of city facilities and equipment.  Constructs/supervises the building, installation and repair of cabinets, desks, shelves and other furnishings.  Maintains, recommends replacements and is accountable for city tools and equipment. Assignments are received in the form of oral and written work orders.  Work is coordinated in various departments through recommendations and requests from departments receiving services.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises/performs skilled tasks in building maintenance, remodeling, renovating, and finishing.  Performs minor electrical repairs, maintains cooling and heating systems, and recommends/drafts plans for work to be performed.

  • Repairs small plumbing fixtures, water and sewer lines. Installs partitions, doors, windows, cabinets, shelves, office furnishings, stairways, flooring, roofing and draining appurtenances. 

  • Prepares and applies varnish and sealers as needed.

  • Performs some masonry work with cement or mortar and brick, blocks, or stone.  Installs/repairs ceramic, tile, and carpet flooring.

  • Keeps accurate records of work performed.  Orders supplies and material as needed. Prepares estimates.        Operates various types of machinery, power tools, mechanical devices and hand tools.

  • May oversee the work of semi-skilled and unskilled helpers. 

  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Education, Training, and Experience

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma

 Special Certificates, Registrations, Licenses 

Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Must have extensive carpentry and related skills and some documentation skills.  Must be knowledgeable and skilled with remodeling, renovations, cabinetry, floor repair, and wood finishing.  Must be familiar with and skilled in other maintenance skills identified in the essential functions.

  • Must be able to read/understand plans and specifications.  Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.  Must be able to recognize dangerous situations/practices and react to prevent accident.

  • Must be able to prepare estimates and quantify materials needed to complete jobs.

  • Must be able to work for various supervisors/departments, establish priorities and insure jobs are completed in a timely manner.

  • Must be able to operate and instruct the safe use of power tools and mechanical devices.  

 Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Requires the ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; most work is performed outdoors during all types of weather.

  • Must be capable of lifting objects over fifty pounds at frequent intervals and heavier objects at infrequent intervals. 

  • Must have the ability to operate tools and equipment used to perform job duties. 

  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Environmental Conditions and Safety Concerns

Some minor physical inconvenience or discomfort routinely present while performing work. Incumbent is outdoors frequently.  Position requires incumbent to be aware of and observe safe working procedures, especially as they pertain to operating power tools, cleaning chemicals, bonding agents, finishing agents and preserving agents.
