A framed memorial plaque for Altus Police Officer John Henry Hill is displayed between an American flag and a Thin Blue Line flag. Below, an enlarged photo of Officer Hill in a suit and hat is shown next to an inscription honoring his service and sacrifice. The plaque notes his End of Watch on September 7, 1934, and describes him as a father, grandfather, husband, and Altus Police Officer whose courage and loyalty continue to inspire.

This month marks 91 years since the End of Watch for Officer John Henry Hill, the first and only Altus Police Officer killed in the line of duty. On September 7, 1934, Officer Hill was ambushed while protecting our community at the intersection of Hudson and Nona Street.

A United States Army veteran of World War I, a husband, and a father, Officer Hill’s life was a testament to service and sacrifice. His courage, bravery, and loyalty continue to inspire the officers of the Altus Police Department, as well as his family and the community he served.

Officer Hill’s name is honored on the Jackson County First Responders Memorial in City Park and in a plaque displayed at the Altus Police Department. We salute Officer Hill and reaffirm that his service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
