Altus/Quartz Mountain Regional Airport History

Altus/Quartz Mountain Regional Airport (AXS ) is a city-owned, public-use airport located just north of Altus and serves as a key gateway for general aviation and business travel in southwest Oklahoma.

A community airport built to grow with Altus

The airport’s development reflects decades of steady investment in safety, access, and capacity. Records from the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics (ODAA) show major improvements beginning in the mid-1960s, including land acquisition for a new north/south runway, laying the groundwork for the airport’s modern airfield layout.

As aviation activity increased, the City and its partners continued to expand the airport’s capability. Over the 1970s and 1980s, projects included taxiway and apron work, runway extensions, lighting upgrades, and the addition of visual approach aids—improvements that strengthened reliability for pilots flying into Altus in a wide range of conditions.

Modernization and safety upgrades

From the 1990s through the 2010s, the airport saw continued upgrades to support modern general aviation needs—such as additional apron and taxiway work, ongoing runway improvements, and expanded lighting and guidance systems. Welcome to Oklahoma's Official Web Site

More recently, ODAA project history notes significant airfield lighting improvements, including LED runway lights, updates to the rotating beacon, and the installation of PAPIs and ODALS—all aimed at improving safety and visibility.

The airport today

Today, Altus/Quartz Mountain Regional Airport operates on one 5,501-foot concrete runway (17/35) and continues to serve local pilots, agricultural aviation, visiting aircraft, and business aviation.

FAA-reported activity has included thousands of general aviation operations annually, with roughly 30 based aircraft (mix of single-engine, multi-engine, jet, and helicopters).

The City of Altus welcomes pilots and visitors with services and amenities such as hangars, tie-downs, a pilot lounge, conference room, flight planning space, ground transportation options, and fuel (100LL and Jet A).

The airport today

In Oklahoma’s statewide airport planning, AXS is identified as a Regional Business airport (with an FAA/NPIAS role of Local), supporting access for business and community transportation needs. The state planning report also notes an estimated $11.9 million annual economic impact associated with the airport and highlights potential future projects such as runway protection improvements and additional hangar development.
