The Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Main Street/US-283 resurfacing project is underway in Altus.
This project includes milling the existing roadway surface, applying new asphalt pavement, and adding pavement markings along approximately five miles of roadway through Altus.
Please note that this is an ODOT-funded and ODOT-managed highway project. Main Street is part of US-283, a state highway. Project decisions, scheduling, traffic control, and construction operations are overseen by ODOT.
While ODOT previously indicated that milling and paving operations within the city core would primarily occur overnight, work activities are currently taking place during daytime hours as the project gets underway. Construction schedules may be adjusted throughout the project based on weather, traffic conditions, equipment availability, and operational needs.
The project is currently expected to take approximately three to four weeks to complete from the start date. Weather can greatly affect construction timelines. Rain and severe weather may delay work, and even after rain stops, crews may need time for the roadway and work areas to dry before certain operations can continue.
Drivers traveling across town may wish to consider alternate routes to help reduce delays. The routes shown are suggested travel options only and are not official detours. The best route will depend on your destination, traffic conditions, and ongoing construction activity.
Main Street remains open, and businesses along the corridor continue to be accessible. We encourage residents to continue supporting local businesses throughout construction.
Wide loads should avoid Main Street during active construction operations and follow guidance from ODOT and applicable permitting requirements.
Please allow extra travel time, slow down in work zones, follow posted traffic control devices, and use caution around workers and equipment. Lane closures, shifting traffic patterns, and traffic control devices are in place to help protect both drivers and the crews working near moving traffic.
The City of Altus will continue sharing updates as information becomes available.
For construction-related questions, please contact ODOT directly at 580-482-3191.
