🚨per Altus Police Department, DO NOT walk on ice especially at the reservoir🚨 “Hello everyone, We have received multiple calls advising people have been walking across the Altus City Reservoir. This is not safe, the ice is to thin and the water is extremely cold and deep. Please advise your family and friends to stay off the water. In 24°F (-4°C) weather while wet, significant hypothermia can set in within 30 minutes to an hour, and death can occur in 1 to 3 hours or potentially less. The specific time depends heavily on individual factors and conditions.”

❤️ A Message to Our Community

We want to be very clear and very intentional.

The Warming Station and Overnight Shelter are safe spaces. This effort is about keeping people warm and safe during extreme cold. It is not about where anyone comes from, where they live, their background, or their circumstances.

We are aware that some individuals have left after seeing police presence, and we want to address that concern directly.

Police officers may be present to help ensure physical safety at the site. The focus at the warming station is on safety, shelter, and basic needs during extreme cold conditions. This message is intended to address concerns about safety during severe weather and does not establish or change City or law enforcement policy.

This space is open to anyone and everyone who needs a warm place to stay or simply wants relief from the cold. No ID is required to access the warming station.

We also want to say thank you. Thank you to our volunteers who have shown up with compassion and care. Thank you to the community members who donated supplies and resources. At this time, we have enough donations to meet current needs. If that changes, we will reach out again.

If you or someone you know needs a warm, safe place, please know that you are welcome here. Our priority is care, dignity, and safety for all.
